The first youth chamber music quartet was established in the mid-1990s
in Juneau. By the year 2000, the interest blossomed into a full
string ensemble, Ursa Major. In 2002, a younger group of aspiring
musicians came together in the second ensemble, Aurora Strings.
During fall of 2004, an entry level ensemble, Ursa Minor, was established
due to the successes of the other ensembles and the growing community
interest in string playing by younger musicians.
The Juneau String Ensembles is currently composed of these three
ensemble groups. The thirty-five students range from 8 to 18 years
of age.
The mission of the Juneau String Ensembles is to enrich the musical
experience of Juneau’s youth through education, travel, and
performance by developing and promoting musical ensembles.
Dedicated to giving young Juneau musicians the opportunity to:
• develop their chamber music skills;
• improve their understanding of a variety of music and compositional
styles;
• collaborate with other community artists and musicians to
bring music to Juneau;
• foster a lifelong love of sharing music with others;
• transcend cultural and economic divides and build relationships
through music.
